How do different cultures perceive nature? Is the natural world something separate from human civilization – a resource to be managed and exploited? Or is nature an extension of human identity, filled with gods, ancestors, and kin? The answer depends largely on which cultural tradition you look at. This question – whether we see “nature as nature” or “nature as human” – is at the heart of the nature-culture dichotomy, a concept with deep philosophical roots and real-world consequences for how societies treat the environment.

The Western nature-culture divide
The separation of nature and culture is primarily a product of Western philosophical traditions. Its roots stretch back to ancient Greek thought, the Enlightenment, and the Judeo-Christian worldview. In the Book of Genesis, humans are explicitly granted “dominion” over all living things, establishing a hierarchical relationship where humanity stands above and apart from the natural world. This idea was further reinforced by Enlightenment thinkers like Renรฉ Descartes, who framed nature as a mechanical system – a soulless machine distinct from the conscious human mind. Descartes’ dualism effectively gave intellectual permission to treat nature as an object of study and exploitation rather than a living partner.
This philosophical separation produced what scholars call the nature-culture dichotomy – the conceptual wall between human civilization (culture) and the natural environment (nature). Western dualistic thinking manifests in a broad range of opposing categories: human versus animal, mind versus body, reason versus emotion, and ecological versus social. These aren’t just abstract ideas. They have shaped everything from legal systems and economic models to urban planning and conservation policy.
The gendered dimension of the dichotomy
The nature-culture divide also created troubling parallel oppositions, particularly around gender. During the 1960s and 1970s, anthropologist Sherry Ortner demonstrated how Western thought systematically positioned women as closer to nature while men represented culture. Men were associated with rationality, intellect, and the public sphere – all “cultural” attributes. Women, on the other hand, were linked with emotion, intuition, and the domestic sphere – “natural” attributes. This parallel suggested that both nature and women were appropriately dominated by cultured men. Feminist scholars like Donna Haraway and Sandra Harding have since challenged these binaries, arguing for more holistic approaches that dissolve the rigid boundaries between nature and culture, male and female, subject and object.
Anthropomorphic representations of nature in ancient religions
While Western modernity separated humanity from nature, most ancient religious systems took the opposite approach. They anthropomorphised natural phenomena – giving human form, personality, and emotional life to the forces of nature. This was not just poetic metaphor. It was a deeply felt worldview that made the natural world relatable and morally significant.
Across Greek, Egyptian, Vedic, and Persian traditions, deities served as personifications of natural forces that humans could understand, worship, and feel responsible toward. Greek gods like Zeus (sky and thunder) and Apollo (the sun) were depicted in fully human form, exhibiting human emotions such as love, jealousy, and anger. In ancient Egypt, deities like Ra (the sun god) and Hathor (associated with the sky and fertility) were portrayed as human-animal hybrids, reflecting a blending of the human and natural worlds.
Vedic and Persian traditions
In the Vedic tradition of ancient India, early scriptures feature a pantheon of nature gods including Indra (lord of storms), Agni (sacred fire), and Varuna (cosmic order and water). These deities were not distant abstractions – they had personalities, families, and stories that connected human communities to the natural forces governing their lives. Similarly, in the Persian Zoroastrian tradition, Ahura Mazda represented wisdom and cosmic order, and was originally depicted in anthropomorphic form. The key ecological implication here is significant: when you see a thunderstorm as the act of a god you worship, or a river as a goddess you revere, you are far less likely to treat these natural phenomena as mere resources to exploit.
Sacred nature in Hindu mythology
Hindu mythology takes the anthropomorphisation of nature further than perhaps any other tradition. In this worldview, natural elements are thoroughly deified – mountains, rivers, trees, and animals are not just parts of the landscape but divine beings with their own identities, relationships, and stories.
The Himalayas, for instance, are not merely a mountain range. In Hindu mythology, Himalaya is a god – a deity with a wife, Menaka, and a daughter, Parvati, who becomes the consort of Lord Shiva. The river Ganga is not just a waterway; she is the goddess Ganga Ma (Mother Ganga), who descended from heaven. As Harvard’s Religion and Public Life project documents, many Hindus believe the river possesses extraordinary healing and purifying powers. Trees like the peepal (Ficus religiosa) and banyan are worshipped, and animals like the cow, elephant, and serpent hold divine status.
This deification of nature creates a powerful sense of moral obligation. When you believe a river is your mother or a mountain is a god, damaging them feels like sacrilege. This belief system has historically fostered environmental stewardship across communities.
The Ganga paradox: when sacred beliefs meet modern pollution
However, the relationship between sacred beliefs and environmental action is not always straightforward. Anthropologist Kelly D. Alley, in her ethnographic study On the Banks of the Ganga, examined a deeply rooted cultural paradox: if the Ganga is considered sacred by Hindus across India, why do people allow it to become so severely polluted?
Alley found that the concept of ritual purity (shuddha) operates on a different plane from physical cleanliness (gandagi) in Hindu thought. Many devotees believe Ganga’s sacred purifying power is inherent and eternal – it cannot be diminished by physical pollution. This separation between spiritual purity and environmental reality means that reverence for the river doesn’t necessarily translate into action against industrial discharge, untreated sewage, or urban waste. The paradox Alley identified remains a challenge even today, as government cleanup programmes struggle against both infrastructure deficits and cultural attitudes that sometimes downplay the urgency of physical restoration.
This example shows that while sacred beliefs about nature can be powerful motivators for conservation, they can also create blind spots when the spiritual and the material are disconnected.
Totemism and ecological conservation
Beyond anthropomorphism and deification, many cultures have developed yet another way of integrating humans with nature: totemism. In totemic belief systems, a clan or community believes it shares a kinship bond – sometimes even a descent relationship – with a specific animal, plant, or natural object. This entity becomes the group’s totem, a symbol of identity, spiritual connection, and moral responsibility.
Totems are found across indigenous cultures in Australia, Africa, the Americas, and parts of Asia. Among First Nations peoples of Australia, each person has at least four totems – inherited ones for their nation, clan, and family, plus a personal totem that recognises their individual strengths and connection to the land. Totems are split between two halves of society (called Moieties), creating a balance that ensures sustainable management of species across the community.
How totemism drives species protection
The conservation impact of totemism is direct and practical. Because totemic species are considered sacred or ancestral, taboos against harming or killing them are strictly enforced within the community. If your clan’s totem is the python, you have a duty to protect pythons – killing one would be a grave spiritual and social offence. A systematic review published in Frontiers in Environmental Science found that various forms of traditional ecological knowledge in Africa – including totems, taboos, sacred groves, and ritual practices – play a significant role in biodiversity conservation.
For example, among the Baima Tibetans, the giant panda is protected because it is believed to have a spirit, and anyone who harms one risks spiritual punishment. Among the Urhobos of Nigeria’s Niger Delta, the python is protected through totemic taboos. In communities across Kenya and South Africa, both animal and plant totems carry symbolic meanings reinforced by prohibitions against disturbing them.
When kinship with nature breaks down
Research across multiple indigenous communities points to a consistent pattern: ecological degradation often accelerates when people lose their kinship beliefs with nature. When colonialism, urbanisation, or modernisation erodes totemic practices, the cultural mechanisms that protected certain species and habitats disappear along with them. The Conservation Biology journal documents how programmes reintroducing totemic species concepts in schools have successfully increased students’ ecological awareness and care for biodiversity. This suggests that the loss of nature-kinship beliefs isn’t just a cultural loss – it’s an environmental one.
Bridging the divide: lessons for sustainability
The nature-culture dichotomy is not just an academic debate. It has practical implications for how we design environmental policies, conservation strategies, and sustainability frameworks. Western science has given us extraordinary tools for understanding ecosystems, but the underlying assumption that humans are separate from nature has also enabled centuries of resource extraction without moral hesitation.
Meanwhile, traditional systems – whether through anthropomorphism, deification, or totemism – maintained a sense of embeddedness within nature. They weren’t perfect, as the Ganga paradox demonstrates, but they created moral and emotional bonds between humans and their environment that purely scientific frameworks often lack.
Contemporary approaches are increasingly drawing from both traditions. Frameworks like deep ecology emphasise the intrinsic value of all living beings. The biophilia hypothesis suggests humans have an innate need to connect with nature. Legal movements granting rights of nature to rivers, forests, and ecosystems are essentially giving legal form to what indigenous cultures have long practised. The growing recognition of traditional ecological knowledge in international biodiversity policy – such as its inclusion in the IPBES framework – reflects a shift toward more integrated approaches.
Neither the Western mechanistic view nor the traditional integrated view is inherently superior. The mechanistic view enabled scientific progress but often justified exploitation. The integrated view fostered deep connection but sometimes created paradoxes in modern contexts. The challenge for sustainability lies in combining the analytical power of modern science with the relational wisdom of traditional systems – seeing nature not as a resource to be managed from the outside, but as a community to which we belong.
