Every species on Earth – from the smallest soil microbe to the largest whale – plays a role in keeping our planet’s ecosystems functional. When even one species disappears, it can set off a chain reaction that disrupts entire food webs, water cycles, and natural processes. Conservation of other living species is not just about protecting animals and plants for their own sake; it is about maintaining the ecological balance that sustains all life, including ours. This post explores why ecosystem balance matters, how we can use natural resources sustainably, the role of wildlife conservation efforts, the international organizations driving these efforts, and the increasingly recognized power of indigenous and community knowledge in protecting nature.

Balance in the ecosystem: why it matters
A balanced ecosystem is one where all living organisms – plants, animals, microorganisms – interact with their non-living environment in a way that sustains populations, renews resources, and keeps natural processes like nutrient cycling and pollination running smoothly. Biodiversity is fundamental to the proper functioning of all ecosystems, supporting habitats for species by providing diverse environments in which they can thrive.
When ecosystems are in balance, they deliver critical services. Forests absorb carbon dioxide and regulate climate. Wetlands purify freshwater. Predators keep herbivore populations in check, preventing overgrazing. Pollinators ensure that crops and wild plants reproduce. Healthy ecosystems supply roughly 75% of the world’s freshwater resources, and forests alone absorb approximately 2.6 billion tonnes of COโ every year.
What happens when balance is disrupted?
Human activities – deforestation, pollution, overfishing, urbanisation, and climate change – are the biggest disruptors of ecological balance. As species numbers decline in any ecological system, that system can lose its resilience and its ability to recover from stress. A single disruption can have cascading effects. For instance, removing a top predator from a food chain can cause herbivore populations to explode, which then leads to overgrazing, soil erosion, and loss of plant cover.
The scale of the crisis is staggering. According to global assessments, approximately 1 million species currently face the threat of extinction, with direct consequences for food security, clean water supply, disease regulation, and climate stability. This is precisely why maintaining ecological balance is considered the foremost responsibility of human beings in the broader context of sustainability.
Sustainable use of natural resources
Conservation does not mean leaving nature entirely untouched. It means using natural resources wisely so that they remain available for future generations. The concept of sustainable use requires that every living being gets the opportunity for survival, existence, and dignity – and that human consumption does not outpace nature’s ability to regenerate.
What sustainable use looks like in practice
Sustainable resource management covers a wide range of practices. In fisheries, it means setting catch limits based on scientific assessments of fish populations. In forestry, it involves selective logging and replanting rather than clear-cutting entire forests. In agriculture, it includes soil conservation methods, crop rotation, and integrated pest management that reduce the need for chemical inputs.
Supporting local farms that use sustainable methods – such as organic or integrated pest management techniques – is one direct way individuals can contribute to biodiversity conservation. Buying locally sourced food also helps maintain agricultural biodiversity and keep rural ecosystems intact.
Human-animal interaction and coexistence
Sustainable use also extends to how humans interact with wildlife. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework calls for effectively managing human-wildlife interactions to minimise conflict and promote coexistence. This includes creating wildlife corridors that allow animals to move safely between habitat patches, using non-lethal deterrents to reduce crop damage by wildlife, and designing urban spaces that accommodate local species rather than displacing them.
The underlying principle is straightforward: human development and wildlife survival are not inherently opposed. With careful planning, both can coexist. But this requires a shift from viewing nature as merely a set of resources to be exploited, toward recognising it as a system that sustains us all.
Protection of wildlife through conservation
Conservation is the deliberate effort to preserve all living creatures and their habitats by reducing the threats posed by human activity and development. It operates on multiple fronts: protecting existing habitats, restoring degraded ecosystems, managing wildlife populations, and enforcing laws against illegal exploitation.
Key threats that conservation addresses
The main threats to wildlife include habitat destruction, overexploitation, pollution, invasive alien species, and climate change. Invasive alien species are responsible for approximately 60% of documented species extinctions globally, causing an estimated $423 billion in economic damage each year. Meanwhile, 35% of the world’s wetlands have been lost since 1970, taking with them crucial habitats for aquatic species and essential water purification services.
Overuse of ecosystems by humans – even through seemingly positive activities like outdoor recreation – can damage plant life, stress animal populations, and introduce invasive species if not managed carefully.
Conservation strategies in action
Effective conservation relies on a combination of approaches. In-situ conservation protects species within their natural habitats through national parks, wildlife reserves, and marine protected areas. Ex-situ conservation preserves species outside their natural habitats through seed banks, botanical gardens, zoos, and captive breeding programmes.
Research has shown clear evidence that species-rich biological communities are substantially healthier and more productive than species-depleted ones, reinforcing that conservation is not just an ethical obligation but an ecological and economic necessity. If climate change further reduces species or genetic diversity, ecosystems could lose their capacity to respond to additional stresses.
The global community has committed to ambitious conservation targets. The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted in December 2022, includes the landmark “30 by 30” target – effective conservation and management of at least 30% of the world’s lands, inland waters, coastal areas, and oceans by 2030.
International conservation organizations and agreements
Because biodiversity loss is a global problem, tackling it requires international cooperation. Several key organizations and treaties form the backbone of global conservation governance.
CITES: regulating international wildlife trade
The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), signed in 1973, is one of the oldest and most widely adopted conservation agreements. Its purpose is to ensure that international trade in specimens of wild animals and plants does not threaten species survival. International wildlife trade is worth billions of dollars annually and involves hundreds of millions of specimens, from live animals to exotic leather goods, timber, and traditional medicines.
CITES currently provides varying degrees of protection to over 40,000 species. Its three-appendix system categorises species based on the level of threat they face. Appendix I covers the most endangered species like tigers and gorillas, for which commercial trade is banned; Appendix II covers species that could become threatened without trade controls; and Appendix III includes species protected in at least one country seeking international cooperation. With 185 member parties, CITES remains one of the cornerstones of international conservation.
CBD: the Convention on Biological Diversity
The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), opened for signature at the 1992 Rio Earth Summit, is the most comprehensive international agreement on biodiversity. With 196 parties, the CBD has near-universal participation and addresses biodiversity at genetic, species, and ecosystem levels. Its three core objectives are the conservation of biological diversity, the sustainable use of its components, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources.
The CBD’s most significant recent milestone is the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), adopted in December 2022. The GBF includes four overarching goals to be achieved by 2050 and 23 action-oriented targets for 2030, all aimed at halting and reversing nature loss. It has been widely described as a landmark agreement – a “Paris moment for biodiversity.”
IUCN: the global authority on nature’s status
The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), established in 1948, is the world’s largest and most diverse environmental network. It brings together more than 1,400 member organisations and over 17,000 experts across six commissions covering species survival, environmental law, protected areas, social and economic policy, ecosystem management, and education.
The IUCN’s most well-known tool is the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which provides a comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of species worldwide. The IUCN also provides scientific and technical expertise to CITES and has been instrumental in producing key environmental agreements, including the CBD itself, the World Heritage Convention, and the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Community knowledge in conservation
One of the most important shifts in modern conservation thinking has been the recognition that local and indigenous communities are not just stakeholders – they are often the most effective stewards of biodiversity. Indigenous Peoples, who make up about 6% of the global population, manage over 38 million square kilometres of land, covering nearly 40% of all protected areas worldwide.
Why community knowledge matters
Indigenous and local communities have developed ecological knowledge systems over centuries of direct interaction with their environments. These knowledge systems include detailed understanding of plant and animal behaviour, seasonal patterns, soil health, water management, and sustainable harvesting techniques. Research shows that lands managed by indigenous peoples and local communities often support more species and experience lower rates of deforestation and degradation than lands managed by public or private entities.
This is not a coincidence. Indigenous land management practices – such as rotational farming, controlled burning, and species-respectful harvesting – are built on an understanding of ecological balance that modern science is only beginning to fully appreciate.
UN recognition of indigenous rights in conservation
The United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 2007, is the leading international instrument articulating the rights of indigenous peoples. It recognises fundamental rights to freedom, equality, non-discrimination, self-determination, land, religion, and culture, and is now endorsed by all 193 UN member states.
The connection between indigenous rights and conservation was further strengthened at the 2024 UN biodiversity conference (COP16), which produced two major outcomes: a new programme of work to include indigenous peoples and local communities in the implementation and monitoring of the Global Biodiversity Framework through 2030, and the adoption of a traditional knowledge indicator as a headline indicator for tracking government progress on biodiversity targets. These steps mean governments are now required to report on how they include indigenous rights in conservation planning – a shift from previously voluntary reporting.
From marginalisation to partnership
For much of the 20th century, conservation often involved displacing indigenous communities from their traditional lands to create protected areas. This approach was both unjust and counterproductive. The modern conservation paradigm recognises that protecting biodiversity and respecting indigenous rights are not competing goals – they are deeply interconnected.
UNESCO’s recently adopted Hangzhou Strategic Action Plan for 2026-2035 for biosphere reserves directly reflects this understanding. Seven out of its 34 targets specifically involve indigenous peoples and local communities, calling for free, prior, and informed consent in reserve governance, integration of ancestral knowledge into research, and recognition of ancestral territories within the global reserve network.
The message is clear: effective conservation requires combining scientific research with the deep ecological understanding that indigenous and local communities bring to the table.
The path forward
Conservation of other living species is not a single action – it is an ongoing commitment that requires effort at every level, from international treaties to individual choices. Maintaining ecological balance demands that we reduce the pressures we place on natural systems, use resources within sustainable limits, protect wildlife from overexploitation, and genuinely include the communities who have the most direct relationship with the land in decision-making processes.
The frameworks and organisations discussed above provide the structure. But implementation depends on political will, adequate funding, and a collective recognition that human prosperity is inseparable from the health of the natural world. The science is unambiguous: we cannot have productive, resilient ecosystems without maintaining biodiversity, and we cannot maintain biodiversity without fundamentally rethinking how we interact with every other species on this planet.
