This back-and-forth between humans and the environment is not a modern discovery. It is, in fact, the oldest story of our species. Whether it’s the crops we grow, the homes we build, or the rivers we revere, every aspect of human life reflects a deep, ongoing exchange with the natural world. Understanding this reciprocal relationship is essential – not just for academics, but for anyone who wants to make sense of how cultures develop, why societies differ, and what sustainability truly demands.

What is human-environment interaction?
Human-environment interaction (HEI) refers to the continuous, two-way relationship between people and their natural surroundings. Humans depend on the environment for food, water, shelter, and raw materials. At the same time, human activities – farming, construction, resource extraction, waste disposal – transform ecosystems in profound ways. This is not a one-directional process. Research in human-environment interaction frames this as a dynamic feedback loop, where human actions alter environmental conditions, and those altered conditions, in turn, reshape human behaviour and social organisation.
For example, consider a community living near a river. The river provides drinking water, fish, and fertile floodplains for agriculture. Over time, the community builds irrigation canals, dams, and settlements along the riverbank. These modifications change the river’s flow, affect downstream ecosystems, and may even alter local weather patterns. The environment responds, and the community must adapt again. This cycle of mutual influence is at the heart of HEI.
Key components of human-environment interaction
The interaction between humans and environment operates across several dimensions. The physical environment includes natural elements such as climate, terrain, temperature, and biodiversity. The socio-cultural environment covers norms, customs, beliefs, and social institutions that guide how people relate to nature. There is also a psychological dimension – how individuals perceive and experience their surroundings, which may or may not correspond to the physical reality. Environmental psychology, as a discipline, studies these reciprocal relationships between people and their settings, examining how different environments affect mental health, social behaviour, and overall well-being.
The culture-nature dichotomy and dualism
One of the most enduring debates in understanding human-environment relations involves the concepts of dichotomy and dualism. In academic and philosophical discussions, “environment” and “nature” are often used interchangeably, though subtle differences exist between them. Culture develops within natural settings, yet it simultaneously assigns meaning to the environment – classifying, valuing, and interpreting nature through human perception.
This creates a tension. On one hand, there is a dichotomy – a perceived separation between humans and nature. Many Western philosophical traditions, from the Enlightenment onward, have positioned humans as observers and controllers of the natural world. The nature-culture divide is a foundational concept in anthropology that examines whether these two domains function independently or exist in a continuous, interconnected relationship.
On the other hand, there is dualism – the recognition that humans and nature are fundamentally interdependent. While we may conceptualise ourselves as separate from the natural world, we remain deeply embedded within ecological systems and dependent on environmental processes for survival. Scholars like Yrjรถ Haila have argued that the strict separation between nature and culture dissolves under careful scrutiny, and that real-world research consistently shows how human activities and natural processes merge.
Indigenous perspectives on nature and culture
The dichotomy between nature and culture is largely a product of Western thought. Many indigenous communities around the world do not share this separation. Anthropological fieldwork has revealed that numerous non-Western societies lack distinct concepts or words to express a nature-culture divide. Indigenous Australians, for instance, view themselves as part of a broader network of beings – including animals, plants, landforms, and celestial bodies – and see their role as responsible caretakers within this interconnected system.
Similarly, the Maori people of New Zealand express their relationship with the Whanganui River through the phrase “I am the River, and the River is me,” a principle that was formally recognised in legal governance when the river was granted legal personhood. These examples demonstrate that the way a society understands its relationship with the environment is deeply shaped by its cultural frameworks.
Theoretical perspectives on human-environment relations
Scholars have proposed several frameworks to explain how humans and their environment relate to each other. These perspectives exist on a spectrum, ranging from those that emphasise environmental control over human life to those that stress human agency.
Environmental determinism
Environmental determinism is the view that the physical environment is the primary force shaping human cultures and societies. According to this perspective, climate, terrain, and natural resources largely dictate how societies develop. For instance, early proponents argued that tropical climates produced less industrious civilisations, while temperate regions fostered innovation. While this view has been widely criticised for its oversimplification and ethnocentric biases, it does acknowledge the powerful role environments play in shaping cultural possibilities. Deterministic explanations in HEI date back millennia and have periodically resurfaced in different academic forms.
Possibilism and cultural determinism
Possibilism arose as a response to environmental determinism. It argues that while environments set certain constraints, human agency and cultural choices determine how societies respond to their conditions. A desert community might develop sophisticated water harvesting techniques, while a coastal community might focus on fishing and maritime trade – both adapting creatively to the possibilities their environment offers. Cultural determinism takes this further, suggesting that cultural context is the only meaningful way to understand our place in nature. Critics, however, note that this approach can downplay the very real constraints that environments impose.
Cultural ecology and the interaction approach
The middle ground between these extremes was articulated by anthropologist Julian Steward, who developed the concept of cultural ecology in the mid-twentieth century. Steward’s approach focused not on nature or culture in isolation, but on the process of resource utilisation – the interaction between people and their resources. His method involved analysing the relationship between subsistence systems and the environment, examining behaviour patterns tied to specific technologies, and understanding how those patterns influenced broader cultural life. Steward also proposed that as technological complexity increases, the direct impact of environment on behaviour decreases, with social factors becoming more important in driving change.
Indian culture and the human-environment bond
India offers one of the most vivid examples of how culture and environment become deeply intertwined. The Indian subcontinent’s relationship with nature is not merely practical – it is spiritual, ritualistic, and embedded in daily life. Nature worship has been an ancient Indian tradition, and all forms of life have historically been considered sacred.
Sacred groves: where faith meets ecology
Perhaps the most striking expression of this relationship is the tradition of sacred groves – patches of forest that communities protect and revere as sacrosanct. These groves are a legacy of prehistoric conservation traditions, where deeply held spiritual beliefs ensure that trees are not felled and creatures are not harmed within their boundaries. India is home to an estimated 14,000 documented sacred groves, though experts believe the actual number could be as high as 100,000, protecting roughly 1,000 square kilometres of unexploited land.
Sacred groves are found across the country – from scrub forests in the Thar Desert maintained by the Bishnoi community to lush rainforest patches in the Western Ghats of Kerala. Each grove typically has a presiding deity, and local communities enforce protection through social taboos and religious customs. In Kerala, these groves are called kavus; in Meghalaya, they are known as law kyntangs. The ritualistic dances and dramatisations associated with grove deities – such as Theyyam in Kerala – represent a rich cultural heritage closely tied to ecological stewardship.
Nature in Indian religious practice
Beyond sacred groves, Indian culture demonstrates the human-environment bond through widespread nature-based religious practices. In Hindu tradition, the five basic elements – Earth (Prithvi), Fire (Agni), Water (Jal), Air (Vayu), and Space (Akash) – are treated as manifestations of the divine and are worshipped accordingly. Nature worship is considered part of Hindu moral obligations, with tree planting and reverence being integral to religious duty. Trees like the banyan, peepal, neem, and tulsi hold sacred significance and are venerated across the country.
Celestial bodies too form part of this environmental-cultural nexus. The sun, moon, and planets are associated with specific deities and play central roles in festivals, agricultural calendars, and life-cycle rituals. Rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Narmada are not merely water sources – they are goddesses, and their pollution is seen as both an environmental crisis and a spiritual violation. This integration of natural elements into cultural and spiritual life creates a system where environmental care becomes inseparable from cultural identity.
How environment shapes culture
The influence of environment on culture is visible across every geographical region. The resources an environment provides and the challenges it presents drive distinct cultural adaptations. Arctic communities developed specialised clothing, housing, and food preservation techniques suited to extreme cold. Desert societies created elaborate water management systems and built architecture designed to minimise heat absorption. Coastal communities developed maritime traditions, boat-building skills, and fishing-based economies.
These adaptations are not just material. Environmental conditions shape social structures, governance systems, and even spiritual beliefs. Societies in flood-prone areas often develop communal decision-making processes to manage disaster response. Mountain communities tend to build strong networks of mutual aid because of the challenges posed by terrain and isolation. The diversity of human cultures across the planet is, in large part, a reflection of the diversity of environments those cultures inhabit.
Diverse responses to similar conditions
Importantly, different societies can develop very different cultural responses to similar environmental conditions. Two communities facing the same arid landscape might develop entirely different agricultural practices, social hierarchies, or spiritual traditions. This variation highlights that environment does not determine culture in a rigid sense, but rather sets a range of possibilities within which human creativity and social organisation operate. Reciprocity between people and nature is not just an action or interaction – it is also a lived experience shaped by reflection, learning, and cultural transmission across generations.
The reciprocal nature of the relationship
The relationship between humans and the environment is fundamentally reciprocal. While environments shape human adaptations, human activities simultaneously transform environments. Agriculture converts forests into farmland. Urbanisation replaces natural landscapes with built environments. Industrial activity alters atmospheric composition. Resource extraction depletes minerals, water, and biodiversity.
These transformations are not always negative. Traditional land management practices, such as controlled burning by Aboriginal Australians or terrace farming in the Andes, demonstrate how human activity can enhance ecosystem health and productivity. The challenge of our current era is that the scale and speed of human environmental impact have outpaced the capacity of natural systems to adapt. Climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution are all consequences of this imbalance in the reciprocal relationship.
Understanding human-environment interaction as a two-way process is essential for sustainability. It moves us beyond simplistic models where nature is either a passive resource to be exploited or a force to be feared, and towards a framework where humans and their environment are co-creators of the landscapes they share.
Why studying the cultural context of environment matters
You cannot fully understand an environment without understanding the culture of the people who inhabit it – and vice versa. The cultural features of an area – its traditions, knowledge systems, economic practices, and belief structures – are all shaped by environmental conditions, and they in turn shape how people interact with their surroundings.
This is why environmental policy that ignores cultural context often fails. Conservation programmes that displace indigenous communities from their ancestral lands, for example, frequently result in worse environmental outcomes because the traditional management practices that sustained those ecosystems are lost. Research from southern India has documented how sacred groves maintained through cultural practices represent natural climax vegetation of their geographical locations, preserving biodiversity that modern conservation efforts struggle to replicate.
The interaction between humans and their surroundings happens through continuous adaptation processes. As environmental conditions change – through natural forces or human activity – cultural practices adapt in response. And as cultures evolve – through technological innovation, contact with other societies, or internal social change – their environmental impacts shift as well. This ongoing co-evolution is what makes the human-environment relationship so complex and so important to study.
