For most of human history, nature was not just a resource – it was revered. Across civilizations, from the Vedic hymns celebrating Prithvi Mata to the Greek worship of Gaea, the natural world was treated as a living, nurturing force. That relationship has fractured. Today, one of its most visible consequences is what we call man-animal conflict – a growing crisis where humans and wildlife compete for the same shrinking space. It is now one of the most pressing sustainability challenges facing countries like India, and it demands careful attention.

Nature as mother goddess: the relationship we once had
Across ancient cultures, nature was personified as a divine maternal figure. In Hinduism, the concept of Devi or Shakti represented a creative force that birthed and sustained all life. The Rigveda uses the term Mahimata – “great mother” – to describe this divine female power. Similar reverence existed in Greek, Roman, Native American, and Andean traditions, where goddesses like Gaea, Terra Mater, and Pachamama embodied the Earth’s life-giving energy.
This was not just symbolic. It shaped behaviour. Communities that viewed nature as sacred treated forests, rivers, and animals with restraint. Hunting was often ritualistic, not commercial. Land use was guided by seasonal cycles and local ecological knowledge. The relationship between humans and the natural world was, for the most part, reciprocal.
The industrial revolution: when the relationship broke
The Industrial Revolution – beginning in the late 18th century – fundamentally altered how humans related to nature. As scholars have noted, industrialized production systems and the associated market economy drastically changed the human-nature relationship by treating the environment as a bundle of resources to be extracted. Urbanization pushed people away from natural landscapes, and the economic logic of limitless growth replaced the older ethic of reciprocity.
The World People’s Conference on Climate Change described this shift starkly: under industrial capitalism, the Earth was converted into a source of raw materials and human beings into consumers, valued for what they own rather than who they are. Forests were cleared for agriculture and industry. Wildlife corridors were fragmented by roads, railways, and expanding settlements. Animals that had coexisted alongside human communities for centuries suddenly found themselves without food, shelter, or safe passage.
This is the structural backdrop of man-animal conflict. It is not merely about a wild elephant entering a village – it is about decades of habitat destruction that left the elephant with nowhere else to go.
Understanding man-animal conflict
Man-animal conflict refers to the negative interactions that arise when the needs or behaviours of wildlife clash with those of human populations. It typically occurs in areas where wildlife habitats and human settlements overlap, and it affects both sides – threatening human livelihoods and safety while also endangering the very survival of animal species.
This conflict is often framed as a development versus welfare issue. As societies pursue economic progress through urbanization, infrastructure, and agricultural expansion, wildlife is pushed to the margins. The resulting encounters – crop raids, livestock kills, and sometimes human fatalities – create deep resentment in affected communities. That resentment, in turn, fuels retaliatory actions against animals.
Animals damaging human property and lives
Large mammals are at the centre of most man-animal conflicts. In India, elephants cause over 500 human deaths annually, while simultaneously being victims themselves – more than 100 elephants die each year from human-induced activities including poisoning, electrocution by fences, and collisions with trains. India hosts roughly 31,000 wild Asian elephants across 29 reserves, the largest population globally.
Nilgai (blue bull antelopes) are notorious for raiding crops across northern and central India, causing significant agricultural losses. Himalayan black bears damage orchards and maize fields in states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Tigers and leopards prey on livestock – and occasionally attack humans – particularly in states where forest boundaries abut agricultural lands. In Maharashtra alone, leopard encounters caused 34 human deaths and 367 injuries in recent years, according to Wildlife SOS reports.
Wolves have been in the spotlight too. In 2024, wolf attacks in several villages in Uttar Pradesh brought nationwide attention to the issue. The affected communities, understandably frustrated, often resort to poisoning carcasses, setting forest fires, or organizing hunts – actions that further destabilize ecosystems.
Human activities disturbing wildlife
The conflict is not one-sided. Human activities are a direct and major cause of wildlife disturbance. These include:
Habitat destruction and fragmentation: Rapid urbanization, deforestation, mining, and the expansion of agricultural land into forest areas break up contiguous wildlife habitats into disconnected patches. Animals that need large ranges – like elephants and tigers – are forced into closer contact with human settlements. India currently has more than 700 protected areas, yet around 35% of tiger ranges lie outside protected zones.
Commercial development and infrastructure: Roads, railway lines, and construction projects cut through migration corridors. The expansion of transport networks through forest ranges results in frequent roadkill and train collisions, killing and injuring animals regularly.
Forest product collection and overgrazing: Communities living near forests often depend on them for firewood, honey, fodder, and other non-timber forest products. Large-scale grazing by domestic livestock depletes the vegetation that wild herbivores depend on, intensifying resource competition.
Changing cropping patterns: Certain crops – particularly sugarcane in Maharashtra – inadvertently attract wildlife. Mother leopards, for instance, seek shelter for their cubs under dense sugarcane stalks, leading to dangerous encounters during harvest.
Climate change: Altered weather patterns, reduced natural water sources, and shifts in animal migration routes are adding new layers of unpredictability to the conflict. Animals are moving into areas they previously avoided, increasing the frequency and severity of encounters.
A closer look: conflict hotspots in India
India has experienced a sharp rise in man-animal conflict across multiple states. According to reports, Uttarakhand alone recorded 700 conflict cases in 2022. Karnataka lost 92 human lives and 126 animals in that same year. Kerala, which witnessed 58 human and 117 animal deaths in 2022, became the first Indian state to declare human-wildlife conflict a state-specific disaster, shifting management responsibility to its State Disaster Management Authority.
In Wayanad, Kerala’s northern district, the situation has been particularly intense. The district shares boundaries with multiple protected areas, and fatal encounters with wild elephants have sparked widespread protests by farming communities. Locals blame the forest department for inadequate warning systems, while authorities emphasize the complexity of managing wildlife in areas where forests and habitations are deeply intertwined.
In the Sundarbans, the conflict involves an especially complex cultural dimension. Both humans and Bengal tigers depend on the mangrove forest – tigers for prey, humans for fishing and honey collection. The deep-rooted belief in Bonbibi, the protective spirit of the forest, shapes local responses to these encounters, sometimes creating resistance to adopting newer conflict-management strategies.
The welfare vs. development dilemma
At its heart, man-animal conflict reflects a fundamental tension between welfare and development. Economic growth demands land, infrastructure, and resources. Wildlife conservation demands habitat, corridors, and undisturbed ecosystems. When these two imperatives collide, the result is conflict – not just between humans and animals, but between competing visions of progress.
India’s Constitution reinforces the bond between citizens and nature through Article 51A(g), which lists the protection of wildlife as a fundamental duty. The Supreme Court has also recognized animal rights in landmark rulings. Yet enforcement remains weak, funding is often insufficient, and collaboration between stakeholders – forest departments, local governments, farming communities, and conservation organizations – is frequently fragmented.
This dilemma makes man-animal conflict one of the biggest questions for sustainability. It is not enough to protect animals behind the walls of a national park if the landscape outside is hostile to their existence. And it is not enough to demand that farmers tolerate crop losses without offering viable alternatives or compensation.
Reconciliation ecology: a way forward
This is where reconciliation ecology offers a promising framework. Coined by ecologist Michael Rosenzweig in his 2003 book Win-Win Ecology, reconciliation ecology is the science of creating and maintaining new habitats for other species in places where people live, work, and play. It is fundamentally different from traditional conservation, which relies primarily on setting aside pristine reserves (reservation) and restoring damaged ecosystems (restoration).
Rosenzweig’s argument is grounded in the species-area relationship – a well-established ecological principle that larger areas support more species. Since humans now occupy or have modified an estimated 39-50% of the Earth’s land surface, protected reserves alone simply cannot save all biodiversity. If we rely solely on reservation and restoration, we risk losing the vast majority of species that exist outside protected areas.
Reconciliation ecology proposes a third path: redesigning human-dominated landscapes so that they can also support wildlife. The core idea is that conservation does not have to come at the expense of human use. As the Chinese sage’s wisdom puts it: “The careful foot can walk anywhere.” It is about treading thoughtfully – making room for other species without giving up the spaces we need.
Practical examples of reconciliation in action
Reconciliation ecology is not theoretical. Many examples already exist worldwide and in India:
Providing wildlife-friendly access to farmlands: Instead of building impenetrable barriers, some approaches allow controlled animal movement through agricultural zones. In Central America, farmers use live tree fences that serve as both boundary markers and habitat for birds, bats, and invertebrates – at no extra cost to the farmer.
Diversifying habitats based on species needs: Research has shown that specific small changes can make a big difference. In Arizona, a rancher deepened his cattle ponds to save a population of threatened leopard frogs – without any impact on cattle operations. In Tucson, researchers found that just 10% cover of desert scrub in urban areas was enough for Gambel’s quail to return to the city.
Community-based coexistence initiatives: In India, organizations like Wildlife SOS run awareness programmes that teach communities how to safely handle wildlife encounters. They also involve locals directly in forest protection – making villagers the guardians of nearby habitats rather than adversaries of wildlife.
Buffer zone management and ecological corridors: States like Kerala are investing in elephant-proof trenches, solar power fencing, and habitat improvement within forests to ensure that wildlife have sufficient food and water inside forest areas, reducing their need to venture into human spaces.
Radio-collaring and early warning systems: Technologies like GPS-enabled radio collars help track animal movements in real time, enabling forest departments to issue timely warnings to communities in an animal’s path.
The mindset shift reconciliation demands
The most important aspect of reconciliation ecology is philosophical: it rejects the binary that the world must be either “pristine wilderness” or “human-dominated wasteland.” As Rosenzweig argued, this false divide pushes people away from nature. When people are separated from wildlife, they forget about it – or become afraid of it. The goal is not to keep humans and animals apart, but to find intelligent ways for them to coexist within the same landscapes.
This requires moving from a conflict-centric approach to a coexistence-centric one. It means integrating wildlife considerations into urban planning, agriculture, and infrastructure design – not as an afterthought, but as a core principle. It means ensuring that the economic costs of coexistence do not fall disproportionately on the rural communities living alongside wildlife.
Moving forward: what will it take?
Solving man-animal conflict is not about choosing between humans and animals. It is about redesigning the systems – economic, ecological, and social – that currently force them into opposition. This includes stronger enforcement of habitat protection laws, better compensation mechanisms for affected communities, investment in ecological corridors, and a genuine commitment to integrating conservation with development planning.
It also requires reviving, in a modern form, some of the reverence our ancestors held for the natural world. Not necessarily as worship, but as a recognition that human well-being and the health of ecosystems are deeply interconnected. The industrial revolution gave us immense material progress, but it also created a worldview that treats nature as something to be used rather than lived with. Reconciliation ecology offers a corrective – a scientifically grounded, practically feasible approach to undoing some of that damage.
