Many customs that seem purely spiritual or ceremonial actually serve a deeper ecological purpose. From pig sacrifices in the highlands of New Guinea to the reverence for cows in India, traditional practices have long helped communities regulate their environments and manage resources sustainably. Understanding these connections between culture and ecology is key to appreciating how indigenous communities have maintained ecological balance for generations – and what happens when those customs fail to adapt to modern pressures.

Traditional rituals as environmental regulation

One of the most compelling examples of how rituals function as ecological mechanisms comes from the work of anthropologist Roy Rappaport, who studied the Tsembaga Maring people of Papua New Guinea between 1962 and 1964. His landmark book, Pigs for the Ancestors (1968), remains one of the most influential works in ecological anthropology.

The Tsembaga were horticulturists who also raised pigs. Pigs were central to their economy, but they competed with humans for food – particularly tubers like sweet potatoes and taro. As the pig population grew, women had to work increasingly harder to feed both human and pig populations. Eventually, the labour required to sustain the pigs became unsustainable.

The Kaiko ritual: more than a feast

This is where the Kaiko ritual entered the picture. When pig herds were maintained and fattened until the required workload pushed the limits of the community’s carrying capacity, the ritual slaughter began. The Kaiko involved the large-scale sacrifice of pigs – during one documented Kaiko, the Tsembaga slaughtered 105 adult and adolescent pigs, reducing the herd while fostering community gatherings and redistributing meat.

But this wasn’t random violence or mere celebration. Rappaport demonstrated that the ritual served several critical ecological functions. It restored the ratio of pigs to humans, supplied communities with pork, and prevented land degradation. The ritual also had a social dimension: the Kaiko facilitated redistributing local pig surpluses and fostered alliances among neighbouring groups, which was essential for social cohesion during periods of conflict.

Rappaport also observed that a plant called rumbim was used to mark the beginning and end of periods of warfare. When the rumbim was uprooted and a Kaiko was staged, warfare could resume. When it was planted, a truce was in effect. This system linked war, ritual, pig population, and environmental health into a single self-regulating cycle.

The ritual as a thermostat

Rappaport proposed that the ritual cycle of the Tsembaga served as a mechanism to regulate human population growth and prevent the degradation of the Tsembaga ecosystem. In systems theory terms, the Kaiko functioned as a homeostat – a self-correcting mechanism that kept the population-resource balance within sustainable limits.

It’s worth noting that later scholars debated whether the ritual cycle alone could maintain ecological stability. Simulation models indicated that ecosystem stability relied on parameter choices that did not always reflect real-world data, and some researchers suggested rituals may primarily serve to facilitate alliance-building and trade rather than functioning strictly as ecological regulation mechanisms. Still, Rappaport’s core insight – that cultural rituals can have measurable ecological consequences – remains widely accepted.

Sustainable resource management through cultural practices

The ecological logic of the Kaiko becomes even clearer when you consider the timing. The mass slaughter of pigs coincided with periods when the combined human and pig populations approached unsustainable levels. This wasn’t coincidence – it was cultural adaptation embedded in ritual form.

During times of warfare and illness, pig sacrifices provided communities with critical protein precisely when they needed it most. Pork was consumed in large quantities, and the meat was shared not just within the local group but across allied communities. This redistribution served as a form of resource balancing – communities with surplus pigs shared with those in need, strengthening social bonds in the process.

The practice also controlled pig populations before they could cause serious damage to gardens. When pigs outnumbered the community’s ability to feed them, the animals would root through gardens, destroy crops, and compete directly with humans for food. The ritual slaughter prevented this ecological tipping point from being reached.

This example highlights a broader pattern observed by ecological anthropologists: many indigenous traditional practices are rooted in a deep understanding of ecological systems and promote sustainable resource use, even when their practitioners may not articulate them in scientific terms. These practices have minimal environmental impact and are highly adaptive to ecological changes, fostering healthy and resilient ecosystems.

Sacred animals and environmental conservation

Another powerful example of customs serving ecological functions comes from anthropologist Marvin Harris and his analysis of the sacred cow in India. Harris, a proponent of cultural materialism, argued that what appears to outsiders as irrational religious devotion is actually a practical adaptation to economic and ecological realities.

The economic rationality of cow veneration

Harris challenged the view that religious values are ecologically irrational, arguing that Indian cattle, far from being useless, are an essential part of India’s productive base. His 1966 paper, “The Cultural Ecology of India’s Sacred Cattle,” laid out the case systematically.

In India’s agrarian economy, cattle provide several essential resources. Oxen are the primary source of traction power for ploughing fields. Cow dung serves as both cooking fuel and fertiliser – the equivalent of 45 million tons of coal worth of cow dung is burned annually, and 340 million tons are used as fertiliser, enabling up to three harvests per year. Cows also produce milk, a crucial dietary staple.

Harris’s central argument was that the prohibition against cow slaughter functions as a form of disaster insurance. Farmers who chose not to eat their cows and saved them for procreation to produce oxen were the ones who survived natural disasters, while those who ate beef lost the tools with which to farm. Over centuries, this practical survival strategy became codified into religious law.

Why killing the cow would be catastrophic

During famines, the temptation to slaughter cattle for immediate food would be immense. But doing so would destroy a family’s long-term ability to farm. A peasant whose cow died was not only experiencing a spiritual loss but the loss of their farm as well. Without oxen, there was no way to plough the land. Without cows, there were no oxen for the future.

The relationship between human and bovine populations in India is symbiotic rather than competitive; more traction animals than presently available are needed for essential agricultural tasks. The sacred status of cows ensured that this vital resource was preserved even during periods of extreme stress.

Critics have pointed out that the sacred-cow concept also leads to large numbers of unproductive cattle and inefficiencies. Religious beliefs and practical decisions are deeply intertwined, making it challenging to attribute behaviours to singular causes. But Harris’s fundamental insight – that cultural taboos often have rational ecological foundations – has been widely influential in how anthropologists understand the relationship between custom and environment.

Cultural adaptation to environmental change

While the examples above show customs that successfully maintained ecological balance, not all traditional practices remain sustainable over time. The practice of idol immersion in Indian rivers offers an important cautionary tale about what happens when customs fail to adapt to changing conditions.

From biodegradable to toxic

Hindu worship involves immersing idols of deities in water bodies after festivals. Historically, idols were mostly made from clay and treated with turmeric and other herbal products to avoid pollution of water bodies. In its original form, this practice was ecologically harmless – clay idols dissolved naturally, and the organic materials used for decoration were fully biodegradable.

However, as populations grew and festivals became larger and more commercialised, the materials changed dramatically. Today, idols are made of plaster of Paris, clay, cloths, small iron rods, and bamboo, and decorated with paints such as varnish and watercolours that contain heavy metals including mercury, cadmium, arsenic, zinc, chromium, and lead.

The environmental consequences have been severe. Studies conducted across India have demonstrated rapid deterioration of water quality in lakes, streams, and rivers as a result of idol immersion, with high nitrate and phosphate levels leading to eutrophication. A 2021 study by the National Green Tribunal found that idol immersion during major festivals increased heavy metal content in localised water samples by 300-400%.

Scale and modernisation: when tradition breaks

The problem isn’t the ritual itself – it’s the scale and the materials. A 1993-95 study found around 15,000 idols were immersed in the Hooghly River alone, and the number has only grown with expanding urbanisation. The paints used on modern idols contain potent carcinogens, and non-biodegradable materials like polystyrene and thermocol clog waterways and harm aquatic life.

Environmentalists in West Bengal have called for zero idol immersions and alternatives, as studies continue to find carcinogenic and non-biodegradable materials in the state’s water bodies. In response, governments and NGOs like Ganga Action Parivar now actively promote eco-friendly rituals, including biodegradable idols and symbolic immersion in artificial tanks.

This example underscores a critical point: traditional customs are not inherently sustainable – they are sustainable only when they remain aligned with the ecological conditions they were designed for. When population growth, industrialisation, and new materials disrupt that alignment, customs must evolve or risk becoming sources of environmental damage.

Why traditional ecological knowledge still matters

Despite these challenges, the broader lesson from these examples is that traditional customs often encode sophisticated ecological wisdom. Indigenous peoples manage an estimated 25 per cent of Earth’s land mass, which accounts for 40 per cent of all ecologically intact landscapes. This is not a coincidence.

The United Nations Environment Programme has increasingly recognised that traditional ecological knowledge offers valuable solutions for contemporary environmental challenges. Applications of traditional ecological knowledge in areas like forest management and cultural burning have reduced the risk of catastrophic wildfires and contributed to habitat restoration and climate resilience.

The Convention on Biological Diversity explicitly calls on contracting parties to respect, preserve, and maintain the knowledge and practices of indigenous communities related to sustainable use of biodiversity. This international recognition reflects growing scientific understanding that indigenous communities have developed, through centuries of observation and adaptation, practices that modern science is only beginning to appreciate.

Bridging traditional knowledge and modern science

The examples of the Tsembaga and the sacred cow show that traditional customs can function as effective ecological management systems. Both indigenous knowledge and scientific knowledge are complementary, and differences can be addressed through integrated approaches and common ground. The challenge lies in identifying which traditional practices remain relevant and how they can be adapted to address contemporary environmental problems.

The idol immersion example reminds us that this adaptation is not optional – it’s necessary. Customs that once worked harmoniously with the environment can become harmful when the conditions that gave rise to them change. The solution is not to abandon tradition but to update it – retaining the cultural and spiritual meaning while adopting ecologically responsible materials and methods.
