What is environmental ethics?
Environmental ethics is a field of practical philosophy that explores the moral principles guiding human interactions with nature. It emerged as a distinct discipline in the 1970s, driven by growing awareness of the harmful effects of industrialisation, population growth, and unchecked resource exploitation. However, its intellectual roots go deeper – back to thinkers like Aldo Leopold, whose concept of a “land ethic” in the 1940s urged people to see themselves as members of a broader ecological community, not just masters of it.
At its core, environmental ethics asks two fundamental questions: what duties do humans have toward the environment, and why do we have them? The answers vary depending on whether you consider nature valuable only for what it provides to humans (instrumental value) or valuable in its own right, regardless of human benefit (intrinsic value). This distinction between instrumental and intrinsic value shapes every major ethical framework within the field.
Key principles that guide environmental ethics
Several foundational principles underpin how environmental ethics approaches moral decision-making about nature:
Intrinsic value is the recognition that all living beings and natural systems have inherent worth, independent of their usefulness to humans. A river has value not just because it supplies water for irrigation, but because it sustains entire ecosystems of organisms and processes. Interconnectedness highlights that all life forms – humans, animals, plants, and even microorganisms – are part of an interdependent web. Destroying one element of this web inevitably affects the others. Stewardship calls on humans to act as responsible caretakers of the planet rather than exploiters. And sustainability – perhaps the most widely discussed principle – insists that present generations must meet their needs without undermining the capacity of future generations to meet theirs.
Another crucial principle is environmental justice, which focuses on ensuring that the burdens of environmental harm are not disproportionately borne by marginalised or economically disadvantaged communities. As Santa Clara University’s ethics centre explains, the classic ethical principle of justice – treating equals equally – extends into environmental concerns when we recognise that lower-income communities often face far greater exposure to pollution and degraded living conditions than wealthier areas.
Types of environmental ethics
Environmental ethics is not a single, unified philosophy. It encompasses several distinct ethical approaches, each offering a different perspective on how humans should relate to nature. Three commonly discussed types – especially relevant to sustainability policy – are the development ethic, the preservation ethic, and the conservation ethic.
The development ethic
The development ethic starts from the position that human progress and economic growth are essential, but acknowledges that this growth has environmental costs. Under this framework, the focus is on balancing development with environmental protection. It does not reject industrial or technological progress; rather, it asks that such progress account for its ecological impact. Think of it as an ethic of trade-offs – accepting that some environmental disruption may be necessary, while insisting it be minimised and managed responsibly.
For example, when a country builds new infrastructure like roads or power plants, a development ethic would require robust environmental impact assessments and mitigation measures to offset ecological damage.
The preservation ethic
The preservation ethic takes a fundamentally different stance. It holds that nature possesses intrinsic value – meaning it deserves protection for its own sake, not because of what it provides to humans. This perspective draws heavily from the work of thinkers like John Muir, who argued that wild spaces should remain untouched and free from commercial exploitation.
Preservationists advocate for keeping certain natural areas entirely undeveloped, such as national parks, wilderness reserves, and protected marine zones. The underlying belief is that some parts of nature are irreplaceable and should not be subject to cost-benefit calculations.
The conservation ethic
The conservation ethic sits between development and preservation. It promotes the sustainable use of natural resources – harvesting, extracting, or using nature’s offerings, but at a rate and in a manner that allows ecosystems to regenerate. This approach is closely aligned with the broader concept of sustainable development and is often associated with figures like Gifford Pinchot, who championed the idea that forests and other resources should be managed wisely for long-term benefit.
Conservation ethics underpin policies like sustainable forestry certifications, fishing quotas, and water resource management plans. The goal is practical: use what you need, but ensure there’s enough left for both the ecosystem and future generations.
Industrial ethics and corporate environmental responsibility
Industries are among the most significant contributors to environmental degradation. From carbon emissions to toxic waste, the environmental footprint of commercial activity is enormous. This is where Corporate Environmental Responsibility (CER) enters the picture.
CER refers to a company’s commitment to conducting its operations in an environmentally sustainable way. It goes beyond mere compliance with environmental laws and involves proactive steps to reduce carbon footprints, minimise waste, conserve natural resources, and protect biodiversity. Unlike the broader concept of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), which covers philanthropy, labour practices, and governance, CER is specifically focused on the environmental dimension of business conduct.
Why CER matters
The reasons for businesses to adopt CER are both ethical and pragmatic. From an ethical standpoint, companies that extract, manufacture, or distribute goods have a direct duty to minimise the environmental harm they cause. From a business standpoint, research published in One Earth journal found that organisations adopting CER policies can strengthen employees’ intrinsic motivation to act in environmentally responsible ways – not because of external incentives, but because they genuinely internalise the company’s pro-environmental goals.
Additionally, consumers and investors increasingly evaluate companies based on their environmental track record. Businesses that fail to demonstrate environmental accountability risk losing market share to competitors who do. Government policies, regulatory frameworks, and international environmental agreements further push industries to take their environmental impact seriously.
Key areas of CER
CER typically covers several operational areas. Energy management involves transitioning to renewable sources and improving efficiency. Waste management emphasises reducing, reusing, and recycling materials across the supply chain. Water conservation focuses on reducing consumption and preventing contamination of water bodies. And emissions reduction targets the lowering of greenhouse gas outputs to combat climate change. Leading companies also invest in green technology innovation and adopt circular economy models to reduce resource waste.
Individual ethics and personal responsibility
While corporate and government action is critical, environmental ethics also places responsibility squarely on individuals. Every person contributes to environmental quality through daily choices – what they eat, how they travel, what they consume, and how much waste they generate.
Individual environmental ethics begins with awareness: recognising that personal actions have cumulative effects on the planet. A single person choosing to reduce plastic use may seem insignificant, but multiplied across millions of households, such choices reshape demand, influence corporate behaviour, and shift cultural norms.
Adopting a sustainable lifestyle can include reducing energy consumption at home, choosing public transport or cycling over driving, supporting ethically sourced products, cutting food waste, and participating in local conservation efforts. These aren’t grand gestures – they are practical, everyday decisions grounded in the ethical recognition that each person has a role in maintaining environmental quality.
The ethical dimension here is straightforward: if we accept that the natural environment has value and that our actions affect it, then we each bear some moral responsibility for minimising harm. This is not about perfection; it is about consistent, conscious effort.
Global cooperation and international environmental ethics
Environmental problems do not respect national borders. Air pollution generated in one country drifts into another. Deforestation in tropical regions affects global carbon cycles. Ocean acidification impacts marine ecosystems thousands of kilometres from the pollution source. This transboundary nature of ecological challenges makes international cooperation not just helpful, but essential.
The role of UNEP
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), established in 1972, is the leading global authority on environmental governance. With all 193 UN Member States participating, UNEP drives collective action on what it calls the “triple planetary crisis” – climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. The organisation facilitates international agreements, supports countries in developing environmental legislation, and promotes knowledge-sharing to strengthen ecological governance worldwide.
UNEP hosts the secretariats of several major Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs), including the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Basel Convention on hazardous waste, and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). It also co-established the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) alongside the World Meteorological Organization in 1988 – a body that remains central to global climate policy today.
Why international collaboration is an ethical necessity
Global environmental cooperation rests on ethical principles of justice and solidarity. Developing nations, which have historically contributed less to environmental degradation, often suffer the most from its effects – rising sea levels, extreme weather events, droughts, and resource scarcity. Wealthier nations, which have benefited most from industrialisation, bear a proportionally greater ethical responsibility to lead mitigation and adaptation efforts.
International frameworks like the Paris Climate Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework represent attempts to operationalise these ethical commitments. They set shared targets, establish accountability mechanisms, and mobilise financial and technical resources for nations that need them most. Without such coordinated action, individual country-level efforts – no matter how ambitious – will remain insufficient against problems that are global in scale.
Anthropocentrism vs. ecocentrism: the ongoing debate
One of the most important philosophical tensions in environmental ethics is the debate between anthropocentrism and ecocentrism. Anthropocentrism holds that humans are the central figures in moral consideration, and that the environment matters primarily because of its benefits to people. Ecocentrism, on the other hand, extends moral consideration to entire ecosystems, species, and natural processes – viewing them as valuable regardless of any human benefit.
Most real-world environmental policies operate somewhere between these two poles. Pure anthropocentrism risks treating nature as nothing more than a resource depot, leading to exploitation and degradation. Pure ecocentrism, while philosophically compelling, can be difficult to implement in societies that depend on resource extraction for survival and economic stability.
The practical path forward often lies in an integrated approach – one that recognises nature’s intrinsic value while also addressing legitimate human development needs. This is the space where conservation ethics, sustainable development frameworks, and international cooperation intersect most productively.
Why environmental ethics matters now more than ever
We are living through a period of unprecedented environmental change. Global temperatures continue to rise, species extinction rates are accelerating, and the planet’s ecosystems are under immense pressure from human activity. In this context, environmental ethics provides the moral compass needed to navigate difficult decisions – about how we produce energy, manage land, regulate industry, and consume resources.
It is not enough to rely on technology or economic incentives alone. These tools must be guided by ethical principles that account for justice, sustainability, the rights of future generations, and the inherent worth of the natural world. Whether at the level of a multinational corporation deciding its emissions policy or an individual choosing what to have for dinner, environmental ethics offers a framework for making choices that are both responsible and forward-looking.
