Sustainability is not just about planting trees or cutting carbon emissions. It is a multi-layered concept that touches the environment, the economy, and society – all at once. When we talk about sustainable development, we are really talking about finding a balance where nature is protected, economies function responsibly, and every person has a fair shot at a decent life. These are the three traditional dimensions – or pillars – of sustainability. But some researchers argue that even three pillars are not enough. Let’s break down each dimension and explore why a broader framework might be necessary.

The environmental dimension: protecting the planet we depend on

The environmental dimension is the foundation of sustainability. Without a healthy planet, neither economic activity nor social well-being can survive for long. Environmental sustainability focuses on air quality, clean water, biodiversity, and the overall health of natural ecosystems. It recognises that all life is ultimately regulated by natural systems, and that ignoring ecological limits leads to consequences no amount of money can fix.

Climate change: the defining challenge

Climate change sits at the centre of the environmental dimension. Rising global temperatures, caused primarily by greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel use, deforestation, and industrial activity, are disrupting weather patterns, melting ice caps, and threatening food systems worldwide. The United Nations has identified climate action as one of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 13), urging nations to limit global warming and build resilience to its impacts. Strategies include transitioning to renewable energy, improving energy efficiency, and restoring carbon sinks like forests and wetlands.

Biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation

The planet is losing species at an alarming rate. Habitat destruction, pollution, overexploitation, and invasive species are driving what scientists call the sixth mass extinction. Biodiversity is not just about saving charismatic animals – it underpins essential ecosystem services like pollination, water purification, and soil fertility. When biodiversity declines, these services weaken, directly threatening agriculture, health, and livelihoods.

Pollution and disrupted nutrient cycles

Pollution – from industrial discharge, agricultural runoff, plastic waste, and air emissions – degrades the very systems that sustain life. Nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, for example, have been severely disrupted by excessive fertiliser use. This leads to problems like algal blooms in water bodies, dead zones in oceans, and soil degradation. Restoring natural nutrient cycles is a critical part of environmental sustainability, requiring shifts in farming practices, waste management, and industrial processes.

The economic dimension: growth without destruction

The economic dimension of sustainability asks a tough question: can we have economic growth without destroying the natural systems that make that growth possible in the first place? The traditional economic model treats nature as an unlimited resource to be exploited. Sustainable economic thinking flips this idea on its head.

Ecological economics: ecology drives the economy

Ecological economics is a field that views the human economy as embedded within – not separate from – the natural environment. According to Robert Costanza, a founder of the field, ecological economics is a transdisciplinary effort that examines how humans are embedded in their ecological life-support system. Unlike conventional economics, which often treats environmental damage as an “externality,” ecological economics insists that ecological limits must shape economic policy.

In ecological economics, a simple circular flow of income is replaced by a more complex model that accounts for solar energy inputs, natural resources, and the waste and pollution that economic activity generates. The key insight is that when resources are extracted faster than they can replenish, the economy is effectively eating into its own capital base.

The problem of unsustainable resource extraction

Deforestation is a stark example. Forests provide timber, regulate climate, protect watersheds, and support millions of livelihoods. Yet, driven by demand for agricultural land, logging, and infrastructure, tropical forests continue to shrink. The short-term economic gains from clearing a forest rarely account for the long-term costs: lost carbon storage, increased flooding, reduced biodiversity, and displaced communities. This pattern – prioritising immediate profit over long-term ecological health – is exactly what sustainable economics aims to correct.

Aligning markets with sustainability goals

Making the economy sustainable requires policy intervention. Carbon pricing, green subsidies, circular economy models, and ecosystem service valuation are all tools designed to align market incentives with environmental protection. As researchers at PNAS have noted, economics combined with earth system sciences is crucial for understanding the trade-offs involved in sustainable development. The goal is not to stop growth altogether but to redirect it – so that economic activity regenerates rather than depletes natural systems.

The social dimension: equity for all

Sustainability cannot be achieved if large sections of humanity are left behind. The social dimension focuses on meeting basic human needs, reducing inequality, and ensuring that development benefits everyone – not just the privileged few.

Basic needs and poverty reduction

Access to food, clean water, healthcare, education, and shelter are non-negotiable. Social sustainability focuses on ensuring everyone’s basic rights and needs are met, maintaining peace, and protecting people from sickness, poverty, hunger, and oppression. The first of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals – “No Poverty” – reflects just how central this issue is to the entire sustainability agenda.

India’s inequality paradox

India offers a powerful illustration of the social dimension’s challenges. The country is one of the world’s fastest-growing economies, yet it remains deeply unequal. According to Oxfam, inequality in India has been rising sharply for three decades, with the richest capturing a disproportionate share of wealth while millions still lack access to quality education and healthcare. India now has over 100 billionaires, yet the country ranks poorly on the Global Hunger Index, and malnutrition remains widespread among children and women.

Research published on VoxDev suggests that rising inequality itself reshapes what poor households perceive as necessary, leading them to sacrifice nutrition for status-related spending – a finding that helps explain why calorie consumption among India’s poor has actually fallen despite rising incomes. This paradox – economic growth coexisting with persistent hunger – underscores why economic progress alone is not enough. Growth must be inclusive.

Gender equity and social justice

Gender inequality remains a significant barrier to sustainable development. Women and girls are disproportionately affected by poverty, limited access to education, and lack of economic opportunity. Closing the gender gap is not just a matter of fairness – it has measurable impacts on economic productivity, child health, and community resilience. Policies that promote equal pay, education for girls, reproductive rights, and women’s political participation are essential components of social sustainability.

How the three pillars connect

The environmental, economic, and social dimensions are not independent silos – they are deeply interconnected. Environmental degradation hits the poorest communities hardest. Economic inequality undermines social cohesion and political stability. And social injustice – such as denying marginalised communities access to clean air and water – is itself an environmental issue. The 2002 Earth Summit articulated the need to integrate economic development, social development, and environmental protection as interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars. The UN’s 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals were designed with this integration in mind.

A policy that boosts GDP while poisoning rivers fails the environmental test. A conservation programme that displaces indigenous communities fails the social test. True sustainability demands that all three dimensions be addressed together.

Beyond the three pillars: Seghezzo’s five dimensions of sustainability

While the three-pillar model is widely used, it has its critics. One of the most thoughtful alternatives comes from Lucas Seghezzo, an Argentinian researcher who proposed a five-dimensional framework built around three core concepts: Place, Permanence, and Persons.

Place: the spatial dimension

Seghezzo’s concept of “Place” encompasses the three dimensions of physical, geographical, and culturally constructed space. It is not just about where we live, but about the meaning attached to a landscape, the identities shaped by geography, and the local ecological conditions that vary from one region to another. The traditional three-pillar model tends to treat sustainability as a universal, one-size-fits-all framework. Seghezzo argues that without explicit attention to place, sustainability policies risk ignoring local realities – the specific ecosystems, cultures, and constraints that define a community’s relationship with its environment.

Permanence: the temporal dimension

Permanence addresses the fourth dimension – time. While the Brundtland definition of sustainable development famously invoked the needs of future generations, Seghezzo argues that the temporal aspect has been largely neglected in practice. Sustainability policies tend to focus on the present, often driven by short election cycles or quarterly business targets. Permanence demands that we genuinely account for long-term consequences – the impacts of today’s actions on ecosystems, societies, and economies decades or centuries from now. It raises hard questions about intergenerational justice: what do we owe to people who do not yet exist?

Persons: the individual human dimension

Perhaps the most distinctive element of Seghezzo’s model is the “Persons” dimension. The traditional framework treats people as part of “society” – an undifferentiated collective. Seghezzo argues this misses something important. As one analysis of Seghezzo’s work explains, individuals and societies can play different roles in sustainability, and merging them into one dimension fails to capture the complexity of human behaviour and personal relationships. People are not just bundles of needs to be satisfied. They have feelings, aspirations, moral commitments, and a capacity for personal transformation. A sustainability framework that ignores individual agency and inner life is incomplete.

Addressing anthropocentrism and intrinsic ecological value

Seghezzo’s framework also challenges the anthropocentrism – the human-centred perspective – embedded in much sustainability thinking. The traditional model tends to value nature primarily for what it provides to humans: resources, services, livelihoods. Seghezzo’s emphasis on Place opens the door to recognising the intrinsic value of ecosystems – that a forest or a river has worth beyond its utility to people. This shift aligns with growing calls in environmental ethics and law for recognising the rights of nature itself.

By expanding sustainability from three pillars to five dimensions – three spatial, one temporal, one personal – Seghezzo offers a more holistic framework. It does not discard the original pillars but enriches them, making space for local context, long-term thinking, and the role of individuals in driving (or resisting) change.

Why these dimensions matter for policymaking

Understanding the dimensions of sustainability is not just an academic exercise. It has direct implications for how policies are designed, implemented, and evaluated. A government investing in renewable energy (environmental) while ignoring job losses in fossil fuel communities (social) is only partially sustainable. A company improving its supply chain efficiency (economic) while sourcing from regions with child labour (social) undermines its sustainability claims.

Seghezzo’s expanded framework adds further nuance. It asks policymakers to consider whether their decisions account for the specific needs of a place, whether they are thinking beyond the next election cycle, and whether they are engaging individuals – not just institutions – in the pursuit of sustainability.

The dimensions of sustainability, whether three or five, remind us that sustainable development is not a single goal but a balancing act. It requires trade-offs, dialogue, and a willingness to look at the big picture – across ecosystems, economies, societies, time, and individual lives.
